When a friend told there was a dairy in Western Minnesota looking for a language teacher, I pictured a barn with one light bulb. Boy was I wrong. I saw an incredibly progressive innovative company who saw that growing their employees was their secret sauce.  They realized that the bottleneck was Spanish speaking leads and supervisors who couldn’t communicate well with the vendors, veterinarians, mechanics and support staff.

I  immersed myself in the inner workings of the dairy and enjoyed many friendships within the hispanic community.  I worked in all of the areas:  I palpated a cow, fed calves, put on milking units, rode in the feed trucks and drove a packer during silage season.  I asked a lot of questions about the dairy cycle and I was always amazed at my learners ability to manage so many issues at once.

After about a year of trying to use ESL books that didn’t relate to the needs of my students, I decided to create my own material which implemented best ESL practices, related to the interests of dairymen and worked within the demands of a dairymen’s daily schedule.  And that is the material L2L still uses today.
